Employer's Story - Liam McGrath

Liam McGrath runs his own professional firm in the Midlands. He provided a work experience placement to local National Learning Network student, Ian Fitzgerald in January 2008. He has since employed Ian on a full-time basis in his busy firm.

I first heard about National Learning Network through Ian’s instructor, Peter McDermott. Peter visited me in my offices and told me a little about National Learning Network and the training it provides to students. He explained the need for students to acquire work experience placements, and asked if I’d be interested in taking on a student. I thought I’d give it a go, and Ian started with us on work experience in January 2008.

It turned out to be a very positive experience. I found Ian to be very well trained. More importantly, he was very enthusiastic and keen to learn. During the placement, Ian worked with us four days-a-week and his role was to input and process data. He quickly mastered what was required and turned out to be an excellent worker. We have a small team here and he adapted very well into the organisation. Within no time at all, it was as if he had always been here.

During the period of work experience, National Learning Network staff called in to visit myself and Ian on a regular basis, just to make sure that everything was going ok. I had absolutely no problems at all with Ian, but it was good to know that the support and back-up was there if we ever needed it.

I was so pleased with Ian’s work that, when his work experience placement was finished, I didn’t hesitate in offering him a full-time position with the firm. He’s been employed with us now since January 2009 and everything is working out very well.

From my own experience, I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending that employers get involved with National Learning Network. I found Ian to be well trained, keen to learn and eager to work. An employer couldn’t ask for anything more!
