Student Central at NUI Maynooth

Student Central: A new partnership with the National University of Ireland Maynooth

NLN and NUI Maynooth are working in collaboration to support third level students in an innovative new project to provide academic support for students with significant learning needs.

The new programme - Student Central  - is an academic support programme for students with significant learning needs who are attending a course of study in NUI Maynooth. Students who typically avail of this support include those with Asperger’s Syndrome, Attention Deficit (Hyperactivity) Disorder or mental health conditions such as depression or anxiety. Support is tailored to meet the individual needs of the student, with the objective of improving academic outcomes and working with the student to meet the learning and study demands of his or her course. An NLN Assistant Psychologist works closely with the Maynooth Access Programme to identify the students who need support and offer individually tailored study support on a regular basis.

The Student Central programme develops the key academic skills that are needed to succeed at third level, such as academic reading and note-taking, academic writing and referencing, exam revision and strategy, presentations, goal setting, and time management and organisation.

There is also a focus on wellness and developing positive mental health. Exams and deadlines can be a source of stress and it is important that students are able to develop ways to manage and relieve this stress.
