Tralee Students Cook Up a Storm in Catering Competition
National Learning Network (NLN) held its second annual Catering competition in IT Tralee on 14th May sponsored by Lee Strand, Pool Catering and Kerry Cleaning. Students from NLN centres all over Ireland travelled to Tralee to take part in this National Catering Competition. The Chairman of the judging panel was John Murray who is a former International Judge and ex president of the Panel of Chefs Ireland, Will King a Culinary Arts Lecturer in the IT Tralee and numerous International Culinary medal winners.
The main competition was won by Ruth O'Connor from Castleisland and the runner up was Irina Pakina from Tralee who also won the overall Hygiene Award. The Bakery competition was won by Vicki Foley from Ardfert.
Over the years National Learning Network has developed strong links with IT Tralee, with five of NLN's catering students progressing on to the Culinary Course in IT Tralee in the last few two years. Earlier this year, two NLN students were hugely successful in the Chef Ireland Competition held in RDS Dublin winning both a Gold & Bronze medal.
National Learning Network has two centres in Tralee - in Clash and a satellite service in the Educational Centre on the Campus of IT Tralee - as well as a retail training outlet in Kerry General Hospital. The centre currently offers training opportunities to more than 170 people throughout the county, who may have been finding it difficult to access further education, training and employment. National Learning Network is very successful in supporting people to take the next steps in their lives with more than 90% of students who completed their training courses last year going on to employment or further training or education.
