Donegal Students in Garden Show Ireland
Talent is in Bloom in National Learning Network in Donegal where horticulture students are, along with children from Dobhar National School, members of the youth club and staff from Ioand Niamh Padraig, part of the Team Challenge garden for the Garden Show Ireland, which will be held in Antrim Castle Gardens in Northern Ireland.
"It’s a wonderful experience working on a project like this, especially with all the different groups coming together to make this a community focussed project" said horticultural course tutor Gareth Austin. "The horticultural class is taking this project on as part of their course. Focused team-working challenges like this are great for motivating a group and with a real target and real goal it makes for a really enjoyable time."
The theme for this year’s Team Challenge at Garden Show Ireland is 'Kitchen Garden', and the name of the garden the Ionad Niamh Padraig are submitting is 'Old v New'. "It will be a celebration of old versus new in terms of food, heritage, energy, sports, gardening and community," adds Gareth Austin. "The support from SOLAS for this project has been great, and local businesses such as O'Donnell’s DIY and Garden Centre in Dungloe have given the group great support in terms of material sponsorship and ideas."
Jamie McGee who is a student on the course based in Ionad Niamh Padraig, Dobhar adds, "It’s an exciting opportunity to be involved in this garden, and it helps to put our learning into some context. My own interest is in organic food production so it’s a welcome opportunity to learn more about historical food growing".
